Visiting the vet doesn’t have to be stressful for you or your pet. At Veterinary Emergency + Referral Center of Hawaii (VERC), we’re proud to be a Fear Free® Certified practice, which means our team is trained to care for not just your pet’s physical health, but also their emotional well-being.

What Does “Fear Free®” Mean?

Fear Free® is a nationally recognized program designed to reduce fear, anxiety, and stress in pets. The training, available to veterinary professionals, groomers, trainers, shelters, and even pet owners, teaches techniques that create a more positive experience at the vet.

The mission is simple: “to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress in pets by inspiring and educating the people who care for them.”

What Fear Free® Looks Like in Practice

Our Fear Free® approach combines gentle handling, thoughtful communication, and a calming environment to help pets feel more at ease. At VERC, that may include:

  • Non-slip surfaces in rooms and treatment areas

  • Calming pheromones and soothing music

  • Quiet spaces and hiding spots for cats

  • Toys, treats, and distraction techniques for nervous dogs

  • Intentional scheduling to reduce wait times and stress

  • Large lobby with multiple separated waiting areas

Why It Matters for Your Pet’s Health

Stress and fear don’t just make vet visits unpleasant; they can also impact your pet’s health. Anxiety and stress can elevate hormone levels, which over time may delay healing, suppress the immune system, and worsen certain medical conditions. By reducing fear, we’re able to:

  • Provide calmer, safer exams and treatments

  • Deliver higher-quality medical care

  • Improve communication between you and our team

  • Help your pet feel more comfortable both at home and at the hospital

Data indicates that the Fear Free® approach has improved veterinary clinics’ ability to help 90% more of their patients, including fractious cats that could barely be handled before.

Fear Free® at VERC

Because we value both you and your pet’s experience, our hospital is a Fear Free® Certified. This means your pet is cared for by professionals who are committed to making every interaction as stress-free and compassionate as possible.

By placing equal importance on your pet’s emotional and physical well-being, we’re helping change the way veterinary care is experienced for the better.

At VERC, your pet’s comfort, safety, and health are always our top priorities.
