About
Dr. Chi-Ya Chen was born and raised in Taiwan, where her passion for veterinary medicine began at an early age. She earned her Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from National Chung-Hsing University before deciding to further her training in the United States in 2013, driven by her deep love for surgery and commitment to advancing her skills.
She completed her clinical year at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine, followed by a rotating internship at Mississippi State University. Her relentless dedication led her to a surgical fellowship at Washington State University, where she specialized in minimally invasive surgical training and assessment. Dr. Chen then completed a surgical internship at the Atlantic Veterinary College of Veterinary Medicine before returning to Washington State University to finish her surgical residency.
Dr. Chen’s expertise spans both soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, with advanced training in minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, and arthroscopy. She also has a strong interest in oncologic and reconstructive procedures, fracture repair, and orthopedic interventions—all aimed at restoring mobility, alleviating pain, and improving her patients’ quality of life.
Beyond her exceptional surgical skill set, Dr. Chen is known for her approachable demeanor and genuine compassion for pets and their families. She understands the stress that can come with a pet’s surgery and takes the time to communicate clearly, answer questions, and ensure every client feels confident in the care their companion is receiving. She also values close collaboration with referring veterinarians, ensuring each patient benefits from a truly team-based approach.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Chen enjoys hiking, snorkeling, cooking, indoor climbing, practicing yoga, and exploring Oahu’s diverse food scene with her husband. Although she wasn’t born on the island, Hawaii has become her beloved home, and she is proud to contribute her expertise to the pets and families of the community she has grown to love.
